The Boozy Bike Ride
From Newton-Le-Willows to Penketh, the THINK team decided to create a 30km bike ride through the beautiful Sankey Valley Canal stopping off at 6 local pubs on the route. Take a look at our route map below and try it for yourself, but please remember to always drink carefully!
Now this bike ride was a fantastic day out. Starting of at the 9 Arches pub in Earlestown for a big breakfast to fuel up for the day! From here we took the short ride down Earle Street to Sankey Valley Canal. This is a particularly beautiful place to start as you immediately encounter the Nine Arches viaduct, which is a fantastic sight.
From here we travelled down the canal until we reached our first stop, Alder Root Golf Club. They have a fantastic bar area overlooking the golf course which is perfect on a sunny day. After finishing our first drinks and taking in the views we were back onto the canal heading towards Great Sankey. The ride down the canal won't disappoint taking in large green areas and woodlands along the way.
After a short ride into Bewsey we reached our next destination, The Maltings. Set just off the canal this pub has a secluded beer garden nestled into the woodland at the rear, it made for another great stop on the way to our final destination Newton High street.
Drinks well and truly finished it was time to get back on the canal towards our mid way point, The Ferry Tavern. The route from here does encounter 2 bridges that you will have to walk over but with long steps to them you shouldn't find it too difficult to cross. As you continue down the canal it won't be long before you reach the River Mersey and our half way mark at The Ferry Tavern. A charming olde worlde inn, The Ferry is light and airy in the summer where you can take advantage of the great views.
Our next stop would be The Swan pub in Winwick. To get here you head back down the canal and break of as you get towards Winwick heading up Hollins Lane. The Swan is a glorious example of Victorian architecture, with striking Tudor Revival half-timbered gables atop red-brick chequered walls. Standing opposite the 13th century Grade I listed St Oswald's Church, where Cromwell's troops rested after the bloody Battle of Winwick Pass, The Swan is at the heart of the historic village of Winwick.
Our bike ride will soon be coming to an end after our 30km ride we finish up on Newton High Street which has a range of great bars and restaurants to choose from, we opted for The Kirkfield. After an extensive refurbishment the Kirkfield is now an elegant, historic building brimming with style.
We really hope you enjoyed our boozy bike ride and ask if you do decide to try it yourself, remember to drink responsibly. We would love to hear about your favourite local walks or rides. Get in touch if you would like more information about this or any other local knowledge.
