How to Give Your Newton & Haydock Bathroom a Cheap Makeover before Viewings

Is your loo putting buyers off? In this week’s sales piece, we look at cheap and cheerful ways to spruce up a bathroom and keep buyers interested.

If a kitchen is the heart of a home, then the bathroom is the brains. It’s where you get a few minutes of privacy every day (unless you’ve got toddlers who like to come in with you). It’s where you do some of your deepest thinking, and it’s an area that could make or break a potential sale.

Buyers need to imagine themselves living in your property, and if your bathroom is a bit dingy, it could put them off.

In this quick read, we look at some ways to spruce up your loo without spending loads of money.

1)   Cleanliness

Possibly the easiest and cheapest way to give your bathroom a glow-up is by getting it clean and sparkling. Get rid of stubborn stains in the toilet or sink by using white vinegar or lemon juice. Pour it in, let it sit for a bit and then get scrubbing.

Grouting can discolour over time and it can be off-putting if there are signs of mould or dirt. If you want to avoid the cost of re-grouting, use a combination of white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and an old toothbrush (not an electric one, obviously).

Make sure all surfaces are clean and clear of clutter.

2)   Shower makeover

If you’ve got a shower curtain, make sure it looks fresh and clean and that there aren’t any visible mould marks. Shower curtains can also smell after a while, so if you’re about to sell, it might be worth buying a new one.

If you have a shower or bath screen, get rid of any water marks, and make sure you dry it with a cloth once you’ve used cleaning products to get it shiny.

3)   Create a home spa

No, you don’t need to invest in a fancy rain shower or wood panelling, but you can use accessories to create a welcoming and relaxing bathroom. Think matching towels folded nicely, reed diffusers, neatly lined-up bottles of shower gels and bubble baths. Also, get rid of old or stained toothbrush holders and soap dishes and replace them with a matching set.

4)   Storage

Even a small bathroom needs storage. Give the illusion of more space by investing in a slimline mirrored wall cabinet to hide all your bits and bobs away. If you’ve got the budget and the space, a vanity unit under the basin is an excellent bathroom addition. Avoid open shelving unless you’re a complete neat freak.

5)   Light

If your bathroom doesn’t have a window, you might want to invest in ways to brighten it up. White paint with a slight sheen is a great way to brighten a dull space, and white accessories such as towels and bathmats will also give a lighter feel.
