A Tenants Guide to Garden Maintenance

A Tenants Guide to Garden Maintenance

Garden maintenance is an important role when looking after your rental property. It is essential to take care of your garden, so it doesn’t become overgrown leaving it unmanageable for you to take care of.

As a tenant, it is your responsibility to keep on top of maintaining both the front and back gardens, this is also stated in your tenancy agreement. If you want to know more about your garden responsibilities and our expectations as the letting agent on garden maintenance, please refer to your contract (Assured Shorthold Tenancy) or contact Jade at the office.

Regular weeding: Keep the garden tidy by regularly weeding the flower beds, lawn, and pathways. Weeds can quickly overtake the garden and spoil its appearance. Try to pull weeds out from the roots to prevent them from growing back. With sun and rain, they tend to grow very fast! Use garden tools to make this easier.

Watering the plants: Proper watering is essential for the health of the garden. Water plants and the lawn as needed, especially during dry spells. Overwatering can just be as damaging as underwatering, so please pay attention to the specific needs of different plants.

Lawn Maintenance: If the property has a lawn, you’ll need to mow it regularly to keep it looking neat and well-kept. Follow a regular mowing schedule during the growing season and avoid cutting the grass to short, as this can stress the lawn. Keep the lawn edges neat by trimming them with lawn shears.

Pruning and Trimming: Trim overgrown shrubs, bushes and hedges to maintain their shape and prevent them from encroaching on walkways or buildings. Prune dead or diseased branches from trees and shrubs to promote healthy growth.

Garden Waste Disposal: Dispose of garden waste is also your responsibility. You can either pay the council an annual fee which allows you to use the green bin for garden waste. The council will then collect the green bin every 2 weeks. Or another option would be for you to dispose the garden waste at the tip.

I’m hoping this gives everyone the positive motivation needed to maintain your garden and a much better welcoming space for you to enjoy!
